An officer observed the driver of a blue Toyota Camry, later identified as 38-year-old Daniel Josephluis Montez, fail to stop at the stop sign when turning right onto U.S. Highway 27/441 at Hartsock Sawmill Road around 10:26 p.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle which pulled over at Sunoco, located at 413 S. U.S. Hwy. 27/441. He approached Montez, introduced himself and explained the reason for the stop. A K-9 unit then arrived on scene and performed an open-air sniff of the vehicle, the report said.

The K-9 positively alerted to the odor of narcotics in the vehicle, at which time the occupants were removed. The officer searched the vehicle and found a twisted plastic bag containing a white crystallized substance on the driver’s side floorboard near the gas pedal within immediate reach of Montez. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed about 3 grams, the report said.

Montez was subsequently arrested on charge of possession of methamphetamine. He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $2,500 bond.
