Leesburg commissioners voted Monday to spend $1.9 million to build a ground water tank at the Highland Lakes water treatment plant. The plant was last upgraded in 2012.
The tremendous growth in and around the city of Leesburg since 2012 has made upgrades to the plant necessary. The construction of the 1 million gallon ground storage tank will be a critical component to maintain the water supply to this growing area, according to Cliff Kelsey, Leesburg Public Works director.
Three contractors submitted bids for the project, Carr & Collier Inc. bid $2.3 million, Prime Construction Group Inc. bid $2.3 million and Crom LLC bid $1.9 million. Crom LLC which has been in the business of constructing water tanks for 70 years, was awarded the job. Construction of the massive tank should be completed in one year.
