An Orlando man with 11 felony convictions was arrested after bringing a gun to a youth football game at Leesburg High School.
Police responded to Leesburg High School, located at 1401 Yellow Jacket Way, regarding a weapon complaint at about 6:46 p.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Multiple callers advised that a man later identified as 40-year-old Quan Woodrow Isom was threatening people on campus with a firearm. They also stated he was trying to leave the area in a gray Dodge pickup truck, the report said.
Upon officers’ arrival, witnesses pointed out the vehicle so they could conduct a traffic stop in the back parking lot of the school. Isom’s wife was driving at the time while he was seated in the passenger seat. She exited the vehicle and followed commands from officers. She immediately told them Isom had a gun in the vehicle, the report said.
Isom was given clear verbal commands to get out of the truck and walk back toward the patrol vehicles, but he began to argue and threatened to kill the K-9 on scene. He eventually stood in front of one of the vehicles. Officers gave him several more commands to get on the ground to be safely detained. He refused to comply and was eventually taken to the ground and detained, the report said.
His wife advised that they were at the high school for the youth football game. During an argument with parents from the Leesburg team, one of them made a remark that upset Isom. He went to the truck and got a firearm from inside. Their truck was very close to the exit, and other spectators saw him retrieve the firearm to stick in his waistband. The other parents fled due to this, the report said.
Isom carelessly and openly displayed the gun during the school-sanctioned event of homecoming and the Pop Warner football game, which were simultaneously going on during the incident. His wife rushed to him and urged him to calm down. She got him in the truck to leave before being stopped by law enforcement, the report said.
His wife further advised that Isom hid the firearm in its original location, back under the driver’s seat, as they tried to leave. She also stated he was intoxicated, which was why she was driving at the time of the traffic stop, the report said.
While officers interviewed the wife, others cleared the vehicle to confirm no other passengers were inside, the report said. Immediately upon approaching the vehicle, two beer bottles still with condensation were seen in the center console. Another bottle of whiskey was found under the seat, as well.
A black EAA .357 caliber revolver with four rounds of .38 special ammunition in the cylinder was located under the driver’s seat. The firearm was ready to fire due to the rounds being in the cylinder, the report said.
A check revealed that Isom has 11 prior felony convictions and should not have been in possession of a firearm, the report said.
As a result, Isom was charged with possession firearm/ammo by convicted felon, possession weapon/firearm on school campus, careless exhibit weapon/firearm on school campus and resisting (obstructing w/o violence).
He was transported to the Lake County Jail after a brief stint at UF Health. Bond was set at $15,000.
