Alma McCubbin Verigan
February 11,1928 – July 30, 2023
Alma McCubbin Verigan, 95, of Tavares, FL left her earthly body behind to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Pensacola FL on July 30, 2023. Her beloved husband, Owen Clare Verigan left his earthly body behind for the same destination on November 5, 2000. They were happily married for 52 years and had three children Victoria Lynn LaByer, Vernon Clare Verigan and Vivianne Rebecca Fish. She left behind 7 grandchildren, Amy LaByer, Luke LaByer, Alice LaByer Durfee, Robert Vernon Verigan, Adam David Verigan, Valerie Verigan Schoeman and Stephen Oliver Chubboy. She has 24 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren! A posterity of 39 and counting. She and Owen passed on a legacy of faith in Jesus, the Son of God, ethics, morality, patriotism and education as well as other legacies too long to enumerate.
She was born in Mt. Rainier, Maryland (bordering Washington DC) to Chester and Blanche McCubbin. She moved with her mom, dad and brother Donald to Miami, Florida when she was 5 where she grew up, married her ‘love at first sight’ WWII veteran husband Owen in 1948 and had her 3 children in North Miami. She was a stay at home mom doing all the cooking, cleaning, sewing and helping her kids with homework and life. She was a volunteer at her church maintaining the library among other activities. The Verigan family’s life revolved around the church, setting a strong spiritual foundation for the rest of their lives. They lived in the same house until Owen retired and they moved to Umatilla. When Owen passed away, she moved to Tavares to be close to her daughter, Vivianne. She attended and volunteered at First Baptist of Tavares, still working in the library which she loved to do.
Alma loved her family and would do anything for them. She was a great encourager and prayer warrior. She was a great servant, ambassador and warrior for the Kingdom of God. She was very charitable and soft hearted. She loved classical music, reading books, watching classical videos and talking politics. She was a noted author and poet and wrote 100’s of poems, dozens of short stories and a few books. Her influence will go on forever.
A celebration of Alma’s 95 years with us will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 1PM, at the Beyers Funeral Home in Umatilla. A visitation for family will be from 12 PM to 1 PM. Burial will follow at the Umatilla Cemetery.
