George Charles Smith
20 December 1933 – 02 March 2021
George Smith passed away suddenly on the second of March 2021 in the presence of his daughter Doreen and son in law, Wally Gagnon in Dartmouth Massachusetts. He also leaves behind son George Smith and daughter in law Maureen McGuirl, son Roy and daughter in law Tara Smith and son, Todd Smith as well as his grandchildren Darren, Matty, Kendra, Alex and Devin. George was raised in the Irish community of Yonkers, NY along with brothers Raymond, Thomas and William.
He and his brother Thomas served together in Korean between 1956 -1958. He also enjoyed a stint as a base player in the country music band Mickie and the Wranglers. He and his wife Ruth moved to Jamestown in August of 1962. During his time in Jamestown, he dedicated his life to the community serving as a police officer under then Chief Fred Smythe, a guard at the Army base at Beavertail, volunteer firefighter and member of the dive rescue team, a construction worker and as a fulltime firefighter at the Newport naval base. He also loved the surrounding waters of Jamestown and would often be found scuba diving or spear fishing at any given time. His “retirement” was spent working at Salve Regina College until moving to Leesburg Florida. Even then he felt compelled to assist others by working for Habitat for Humanity in Central America and rebuilding a local church roof in Leesburg, just to show the young guys how to do it right. His love of thrills also had him skydiving at 70 years old.
So, we have chosen to honor and remember him. Loving us from above and soaring in our hearts. Missed and always loved.
